Viking Bay invaded by Year 3 Environmental Warriors

"Year 3 have had an amazing trip to the beach at Viking bay !

We have looked at learning environments before , but did you realise what a fantastic opportunity a beach trip is for learning?

The children have used a map to safely navigate their way from school to the beach in a "walking bus".

They have conducted a treasure hunt where they have looked for and found smooth and rough objects, objects that are and objects that are not natural to the beach. They have used litter-pickers to collect rubbish and items that should not be on the beach and looked at the impact of each. How long does Styrofoam take to break down? Is rubber a natural material for the beach? They have found winkles and shells, seaweed and small creatures and have learnt how far the tide comes in when it turns in Viking Bay. There were some more practical lessons to do with wet socks and sand and how to get sand off your feet before you put your socks on. But it was a fantastic day and the children will be coming back to the beach in two weeks time when their next batch of beach learning is ready!
