British Values

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School we have shared and reflected upon what British Values means to us.

We support opportunities for all members of our school community to reinforce the ownership of ‘Being British’. Pupils, parents, staff and the Local Governance Committee recognise that we are held together by the shared human values of respect for others, freedom of expression, democracy and rule of law.

We want our school community to be proud of its nation and understand how each of us can contribute as an effective citizen, locally and globally. We understand that this important process begins at a very early age and it is one we seek to nurture within our school community.

We understand that everyone is different, but celebrate our school diversity as a strength, not a weakness. Children learn that information can be distorted to try to influence others and are encouraged to think for themselves and question the facts before making assumptions.

The promotion of ‘British values’ is central to Catholic education because British values have their origin in the Christian values of our nation.

“We are proud that Catholic schools promote values that are both Catholic and British, including: respect for the individual, democracy, individual liberty, respect, tolerance and inclusiveness. Our schools promote cohesion by serving more ethnically diverse and poorer communities. Catholic schools provide high standards of education which are popular with parents from all social, economic and faith backgrounds.”

Paul Barber (Catholic Education Service 15 December 2014).

At St. Joseph’s we seek to live out the values of Jesus Christ. We promote these values through our words, deeds and Catholic doctrine. This practice permeates every aspect of the school life and all activities within it.

Our curriculum is designed to enable every pupil to discern their vocation and to be well-equipped to follow it as active citizens in service to the world.

Catholic Religious Education is the “core of the core curriculum” (Pope St John Paul II)  and the foundation of the entire educational process.
