Science Intent

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we will present you with exciting opportunities to apply your problem solving and enquiry skills to a variety of situations in order to enable you to discover and learn about the science behind every day phenomena.

As a scientist, you will be able to learn and investigate a whole range of scientific ideas and concepts. In EYFS, Science is covered in the ‘Understanding of the World’ area of the curriculum. It is introduced indirectly through activities that will encourage you to explore, observe, predict, think, problem solve, make decisions and talk about the world around you. As you progress through the school, asking questions and investigating predictions will become second nature to you.

During your experiments, you will also learn how to confidently use a range of scientific equipment to assist you in your problem solving. In addition to this, you will gain valuable knowledge regarding a range of scientific topics including the following: animals including humans; forces; electricity and light; Earth and space; evolution and inheritance; and materials and their properties.

You will also have many opportunities for learning outside the classroom – including trips to relevant museums and different environments. During our annual Science Week, you will take part in a variety of practical activities and presentations from people who work in an area of science. You may also wish to join our after-school coding and STEM clubs.
Throughout your time at St Joseph’s, you will build on your investigation skills, improving and refining these until you are a confident and successful young scientist.
