Mathematical Intent

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, mathematical understanding is viewed as an essential life skill. The provision of a high-quality ambitious Mathematics education is therefore of fundamental importance to the children within our charge. We “Aim high” with our curriculum so that become competentskilled and effective Mathematicians; and the belief that we can inspire an enthusiasm for learning, an appreciation of the relevance of, and a love for Maths.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile structures learning in our Reception class with a high focus on number and subitizing. In Key Stages 1 and 2, we follow the National Curriculum, with comprehensive coverage of all its strands – Number, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics and Algebra. We endeavour that all pupils become fluent in calculation techniques, reason mathematically and can solve problems by applying their knowledge and understanding.

Our school calculation policy ensures a consistent and cohesive approach across the key stages. Models, images and practical resources are used throughout the school to support children’s understanding. We explicitly teach number facts and children are supported to learn their times tables. One way in which we encourage children at St Josephs to develop their fluency in multiplication is with our times table online learning platform Times tables Rockstars, with which we run competitions and compare ourselves to other local schools.

At St Joseph’s, it is essential that children see the relevance of Mathematics and are able to establish meaningful links to real-life situations. Reasoning challenges, with problems in context, are delivered throughout the week. We encourage engagement and enjoyment, developing our children as independent learners, by allowing them to select and progress through a series of increasingly robust challenges in fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
Strategic planning is structured to revisit subject knowledge to promote retention of key skills is planned for at the end of each year to ensure that children are ready to progress to the next year group.

By these means, with a steadfast commitment to the provision of a high-quality ambitious Mathematics education, we resolve to reach our ultimate goal – that all of our children will become competent and effective Mathematicians and develop a lifelong love of this vital subject.
