Roman Soldiers and Bronze Age Boats

As part of our History topic of ‘Romans’, Year 3 went to Dover Museum for a day of learning, fun and arts and craft.  On arrival we went straight into creating a clay Roman Soldier head (something we only learnt about last week).  With excellent help from museum staff, we set about creating the scariest soldier possible with broken noses, missing teeth and scars.  These will be painted after half term and sent home for you all to enjoy!

We then had an artefact handing session with the incredibly knowledgeable Martin.  We held actual Roman artefacts and replicas and had to try to figure out what they were used for and which ones were genuine and which were replicas.  We were so lucky to actually hold pieces of Roman mosaics, oil lamps and horse shoes from over 1500 years ago.

After lunch we had a look around the Roman museum at lots of genuine Roman artefacts found right underneath the museum and in Kent.  Before we left we were lucky enough to have a very enjoyable chat with the museum staff about the Bronze Age (our first History topic of the year) boat found in Dover, the oldest known boat in the whole world.  An excellent end to a thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating day.
