European Day of Languages

On Friday 24th September Years 1 - 6 celebrated European Day of Languages

As well as learning a little bit about this special day, each class chose to look closer at one European language.

Year 1 learnt about Portugal on European Day of Languages!! We started off the day by learning some words and phrases in Portuguese and then went on to research where it is in Europe and learn about the culture. We then tried some tasty Pastéis de Nata, a Portuguese delicacy!

Year 2 found out about where Italy is and how it is the shape of a boot.  They researched life in an Italian school and practised greeting each other at different times of the day.  We also compared our favourite pizza toppings.

In Year 3, we celebrated the European Day of Languages by learning the names of some of our closest European neighbours and how to say hello in various different languages.

We listened to children’s experiences of visiting and living in different European countries and heard some Romanian from Juliana.

We found out about the origins of different European foods. The children were quite interested in the similarities between different languages for certain words.

In Year 4, we were German for the day, exploring Germany and the language of German by learning commonly used questions, answers and phrases, such as 'How old are you', 'How are you' and how to say good morning, good evening and thank you. We also taste tested a range of popular German food such as stollen, lebkuchen and pretzels. We had mixed reviews on the food but the whole class thoroughly enjoyed trying something new and different. Finally, we had a quiz to test our knowledge of Germany and all things German.

On the European Day of Languages, Year 5 started the day with a quiz about the languages spoken in European - there were surprises for the children and adults!

We then learnt all about France. We learnt about the natural features of France, famous buildings, culture and festivals, food and even learnt a few French phrases! Our learning spiked off many discussions about the French revolution and the role of France in WW2. We later put our research into action, designing bunting featuring our favourite facts about France.

During the afternoon we listened to Disney songs in a variety of languages - we guessed the languages and then watched the soundtrack with an accompanying video to see whether we were correct.

Year 6 researched EDol and had a quiz, then spent the afternoon learning Spanish introductions / greeting, numbers and days of the week with songs.
