Year 4 Dive Into the Rainforest!

Last week, Year 4 took part in an exciting and immersive rainforest workshop led by Juliet from Wildwood. The children were completely engaged from start to finish and came away with a wealth of new knowledge about these incredible ecosystems.

The session began with an exploration of how plants have adapted to survive in the rainforest. Pupils examined features such as drip-tip leaves and towering buttress roots, discussing how each clever adaptation helps plants thrive in such a unique environment.

The children then turned their attention to rainforest animals, sorting them into the four distinct layers: forest floor, understory, canopy, and emergent. Using globes, they also mapped where rainforests are found around the world, gaining a clearer sense of how rare and precious these habitats are.

A real highlight of the day was a hands-on science activity in which the class created clouds in a bottle using water and smoke. The delight on their faces as they watched clouds form before their eyes made the learning even more memorable, especially as they connected this phenomenon to the rainforest climate.

The workshop also encouraged pupils to reflect on how they can help protect the rainforest, considering everyday choices that support conservation. To finish, the class explored a selection of foods with rainforest origins—discovering that many familiar favourites, including chocolate, bananas, and spices, come from these vibrant ecosystems.

It was a fantastic day of learning, curiosity, and environmental awareness. Year 4 left the workshop buzzing with enthusiasm and a renewed appreciation for the world’s rainforests. 🌎💚
