VE Day celebrations at St. Joseph's

On Thursday 8th May  the children of St Josephs celebrated two key events in British history, both connected to World War Two. These were the 85th evacuation of Dunkirk and the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The children attended an assembly in the morning where they looked at the links to our local area, including the Sundowner ship which was captained by Captain Lightoller of the Titanic, and they listened to the speech from Winston Churchill declaring VE Day. Later in the day, the children made their own small ships and we loaded them with love, care, and hope as  they sent them on their way to Dunkirk across our specially constructed English Channel.

Our History Lead Sharon Osborne said ‘it is such a major local historical event that we wanted to ensure the children learnt about the evacuation of Dunkirk and the important role played by the little ships of Ramsgate in the rescue of so many British and Allied troops”
